Frequently asked questions
How many ibuprofen 400mg can I take a day?
Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over can take 1 tablet up to 3 times a day, leaving at least 4 hours between doses. Do not take more than 3 tablets (1200mg) in 24 hours unless a doctor has advised a higher dose.
What is the difference between 200mg and 400mg ibuprofen?
They contain the same medicine at different strengths. The 400mg tablet delivers a higher single dose, which can suit moderate pain that a 200mg dose does not control. The maximum daily total over the counter is the same (1200mg), so 400mg means fewer tablets per day.
Can I take ibuprofen 400mg with paracetamol?
Yes. Ibuprofen and paracetamol can be taken together or alternated, as they work in different ways, provided you stay within the maximum daily dose of each. Do not take any other ibuprofen or NSAID product at the same time.
Why is ibuprofen 400mg sold as a pharmacy medicine?
At this strength ibuprofen is classed as a Pharmacy (P) medicine, so the pharmacy team may ask a few questions about your symptoms and other medicines before supplying it. This is a routine safety check, not a sales obstacle.
Safety & storage
- Take with or after food, and use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed.
- Do not take with other NSAIDs, including aspirin above 75mg a day or other ibuprofen products.
- Stop and seek urgent medical help if you have signs of stomach bleeding (black stools or vomiting blood), severe stomach pain, or a severe allergic reaction.
- Avoid in the last three months of pregnancy. Ask your pharmacist before use if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat, and keep out of the sight and reach of children.
