Dosage (from the Summary of Product Characteristics)
The pharmacist will confirm the exact regimen for your circumstances during the consultation. The licensed dosing is summarised below.
Hypertriglyceridaemia
Starting dose typically 2 capsules per day. If an adequate triglyceride response is not achieved, the dose may be increased to 4 capsules per day. Capsules may be taken with food to reduce the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects.
Post-myocardial infarction (where licensed)
One capsule per day, taken with food, as adjunctive therapy alongside standard secondary-prevention treatment (e.g. statin, antiplatelet, beta-blocker, ACE inhibitor) prescribed by the patient's cardiologist or GP.
Who should not take this medicine
- Known hypersensitivity to fish, soya, or any other listed excipient
- The pharmacist will also assess pregnancy, breastfeeding, hepatic impairment, recent surgery or trauma, and concurrent anticoagulant therapy during the consultation
Frequently asked questions
How is Omacor different from over-the-counter fish-oil capsules?
Omacor is a licensed UK medicine, not a food supplement. It contains omega-3-acid ethyl esters at 90% concentration — about 840 mg of combined EPA and DHA per 1000 mg capsule. Most over-the-counter fish-oil capsules sit closer to 30% omega-3, so reaching the same EPA and DHA intake from standard fish oil requires several capsules per day.
Can I take Omacor with anticoagulants such as warfarin or DOACs?
Tell the pharmacist about any anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication during the consultation. Higher-dose omega-3 may prolong bleeding time, so concurrent use may require additional INR monitoring or a dose review of the anticoagulant. This is a routine question on our consultation form.
Is Omacor safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The pharmacist will assess this individually during the consultation. Omacor is not routinely recommended in pregnancy or breastfeeding outside specific clinical contexts, and supply will only proceed where the clinical benefit clearly outweighs the risk.
What are the common side effects of Omacor?
The most commonly reported side effects are mild gastrointestinal upset — dyspepsia, nausea, and a fishy aftertaste — which can often be reduced by taking the capsule with food. Less common effects are listed in the Patient Information Leaflet, which should be read before starting the medicine.
Do I still need my statin or other heart medication if I take Omacor?
Yes. Omacor is an adjunct to — not a replacement for — statins, antiplatelets and the rest of your prescribed cardiovascular medication. Do not stop or reduce any prescribed medicine without speaking to your GP or cardiologist.
How should Omacor be stored?
Store below 25 °C, in the original bottle, tightly closed. Do not freeze. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the carton.
