Ways Pharmacy is the only Chinese yellow fever registered vaccine center in the UK, serving as your leading local provider of travel vaccinations.
Yellow fever is a potentially life-threatening viral disease found in tropical regions of Africa, South America, and Central America. In the UK, the yellow fever vaccine can only be received at designated yellow fever clinics. When attending a yellow fever vaccine appointment, please remember to bring your passport.
About the Vaccine
- When to get vaccinated: At least 10 days before traveling.
- Booster vaccines: The yellow fever vaccine can be effective for life. Most people will not need any boosters for future travel.
- Dosage: One dose.
- Method of administration: The yellow fever vaccine is usually administered as an injection in the upper arm.
- How long is the yellow fever vaccine effective? The yellow fever vaccine can offer lifetime protection (with some exceptions, such as children under 2 years of age who may need a booster).
- Side effects: Severe side effects from the yellow fever vaccine are rare. Common side effects include soreness at the injection site, headache, and pain.
- Children: The vaccine is generally not recommended for children under nine months of age.
- Other preventive measures: In addition to vaccination, you will also need to avoid mosquito bites.
- Certificate requirements: Some countries require a yellow fever certificate. Your certificate will become valid 10 days after you get vaccinated.
- Risk of contracting yellow fever: The spectrum of yellow fever ranges from a mild flu-like illness to fatal disease causing internal bleeding and organ damage.
The yellow fever vaccine is available at Ways Pharmacy Travel Health Clinic, a registered yellow fever center. You need to arrange a vaccination appointment at least ten days before your travel. Once vaccinated, you will be protected for life (with some exceptions, such as children under 2 years of age who may need a booster).
Please note that it's best to leave at least a 4-week gap between getting the MMR vaccine and the yellow fever vaccine to ensure vaccine effectiveness. If you believe you urgently need yellow fever protection but might not be able to leave this gap, consult your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for advice.
Yellow Fever Prevention
When abroad, protect yourself from mosquito bites in addition to getting vaccinated against yellow fever in a timely manner.
Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to block mosquitoes and reduce the risk of infection. You might also want to carry mosquito coils or plug-in devices for use in your accommodations.
By avoiding swamps and other mosquito breeding grounds, you can minimize the chances of insect bites. Ideally, stay in places with air conditioning, or at least with insect screens on all windows.
Yellow Fever Countries
Currently, yellow fever affects residents or travelers in 43 countries across the African continent and South America.
Known high-risk African countries include most Central African countries, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso.
Travelers planning to visit South America should consider getting vaccinated if traveling to Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, or Venezuela.
Please note: The list of countries considered at risk is constantly changing. For the latest information on vaccines required for your destination, search here.
Side Effects
Most vaccinations can cause side effects in some patients. The yellow fever vaccine is no exception, and you may experience headaches, muscle pain, and fever in the days following vaccination. You might also notice swelling or redness at the injection site, which should subside within two weeks. If you encounter any other related side effects or do not improve within two weeks, seek medical advice.
If you notice signs of an allergic reaction after getting the vaccine, seek emergency medical help immediately. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash or hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, and feeling weak or faint.
Yellow Fever Vaccine Certificate ("Yellow Book")
Many countries require a yellow fever certificate, known as the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Even if not required by other risk destinations, you still need to get vaccinated if visiting a risk area. Remember, your yellow fever proof only becomes valid ten days after injection.
Yellow fever certificates used to expire after a certain number of years. However, they are now valid for life for most people. This includes certificates issued before the rule change in July 2016 that have an expiry date.
If you have been vaccinated at our clinic but lost your yellow fever certificate, our staff will be able to issue a replacement card. We charge a £30 administration fee for issuing a new yellow fever certificate.
If you receive your vaccine at our clinic, there is no additional charge for your first certificate。
