Who it is for
- Women who have missed a period and want to confirm or rule out pregnancy
- Women trying to conceive who want to test from the first day of an expected period
- Women whose contraceptive method may have failed and want a fast home check
- Women who want a 2-test pack to repeat the test a few days later if the first result is negative but the period has not arrived
Not suitable for: confirming the location of pregnancy (ectopic or intrauterine — this requires GP/ultrasound assessment); estimating gestational age; people taking medication containing hCG (e.g. some fertility treatments) — discuss with your doctor; reliably testing earlier than the day of the expected period.
How to use
- Remove a test strip from its sealed pouch just before use. Check the expiry date.
- Collect urine in a clean, dry container. The first urine of the day is recommended for the most accurate early result.
- Hold the strip by the coloured handle. Dip the absorbent end into the urine up to the marked line for the time stated on the leaflet (typically 5–10 seconds).
- Lay the strip flat on a clean, dry, non-absorbent surface.
- Read the result at 1 minute, and no later than the maximum time stated on the leaflet (usually 10 minutes).
- If the first test is negative but your period still has not started after a few days, use the second test in the pack with first-morning urine.
Refer to the kit-specific instructions on the day — exact dip time, read window and minimum sensitivity may vary slightly by lot.
How to read the result
- Two lines (test line and control line, even if the test line is faint) — positive: hCG detected, indicating pregnancy
- One line in the control region only — negative: hCG not detected at the test's threshold
- No control line — invalid: repeat with the second strip following the instructions carefully
Frequently asked questions
How early can the Alvita test detect pregnancy?
The test is designed to give a 99% accurate result from the day of your expected period. Testing earlier than this is possible but gives a higher chance of a false negative because hCG levels in urine may not yet be high enough to detect. If you test early and get a negative result but your period does not arrive, repeat the test using the second strip a few days later.
What does a faint line mean?
Any visible test line, even a faint one, in addition to a control line is interpreted as a positive result. A faint line usually indicates a low level of hCG, which can happen very early in pregnancy. Repeat the test in 48–72 hours with first-morning urine; if pregnant, hCG levels typically double approximately every 2–3 days in early pregnancy.
Can any medication affect the result?
Most medications, including the contraceptive pill, antibiotics, and painkillers, do not affect the result. Fertility medication containing hCG (such as some ovulation-inducing injections) can cause a false positive. If you are unsure, ask your pharmacist or GP.
What should I do if my result is positive?
Contact your GP or midwifery service to arrange your first antenatal appointment. You should start taking 400 micrograms of folic acid daily if you are not already taking it, ideally continuing until at least 12 weeks of pregnancy. The NHS pregnancy pages have full early-pregnancy guidance.
What should I do if my result is negative but my period has not started?
Use the second test strip with first-morning urine 3–4 days later. If the result is still negative and your period has not arrived within a week of the missed date, see your GP — irregular cycles, stress, hormonal changes and other conditions can all delay periods.
Is the test reliable?
When used correctly from the day of the expected period, the manufacturer states a 99% accuracy rate. Reliability is reduced if the test is used too early, the urine is too dilute (drink less fluid before testing), the strip is damaged, or the result is read outside the stated time window.
