Frequently asked questions
How does lactulose work?
Lactulose is an osmotic laxative. It draws water into the bowel, which softens the stool and makes it easier and more comfortable to pass.
How long does lactulose take to work?
Lactulose works gradually. It may take up to 2 to 3 days to have its full effect, so it is not for instant relief of constipation.
How long can I take lactulose?
Use it for the shortest time needed. Do not take it for longer than 2 weeks without speaking to your doctor, who can check why constipation is continuing.
Can I take lactulose in pregnancy?
Lactulose is sometimes used during pregnancy, but you should speak to your pharmacist or doctor before use so they can confirm it is suitable for you.
Can children take lactulose?
It can be used in children with the dose adjusted by age. For babies and very young children, use it only on a doctor's advice.
Safety and storage
- Always read the patient information leaflet before use, as manufacturers update it regularly.
- Stop and see your doctor if you have ongoing abdominal pain, no improvement, or symptoms such as nausea or bloating after use.
- Long-term use of too high a dose can cause diarrhoea and disturb the body's salt balance.
- Store below 25°C; do not refrigerate or freeze. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use after the expiry date shown on the bottle.
