Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), a common condition that causes frequent heartburn and acid regurgitation. Who Is Rabeprazole Suitable For?

This service is intended for:

Adults aged 18 and over

Those experiencing frequent acid reflux, heartburn, or regurgitation

Individuals previously diagnosed with GORD or who have responded well to PPIs before

Patients preferring to manage their condition without needing a GP visit

If you’ve been experiencing symptoms multiple times per week, especially after meals or while lying down, Rabeprazole can offer meaningful relief and reduce the risk of oesophageal damage.

Who Should Not Take Rabeprazole?

You should not take this medicine if you:

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have severe liver disease or a history of gastric ulcers or gastrointestinal surgery
• Experience alarming symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, vomiting blood, difficulty swallowing, or black stools
• Are allergic to rabeprazole or other PPIs (e.g. omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole)
• Are currently taking certain medications that interact with PPIs (such as HIV protease inhibitors, methotrexate, or anticoagulants)

If any of the above apply, or your symptoms persist beyond 4 weeks, you should consult your GP for further investigation, including potential endoscopy.

How to Take Rabeprazole

• Rabeprazole 10mg tablets should be swallowed whole, preferably once daily before breakfast.
• Do not chew or crush the tablet
• Take at the same time each day with a glass of water
• A typical initial treatment course is 4 weeks, with possible repeat courses if symptoms persist
• Do not double your dose if you miss a tablet. Simply take your next dose as scheduled.

Possible Side Effects

Rabeprazole is well-tolerated, but some people may experience:

• Headache or dizziness
• Nausea, abdominal pain, or diarrhoea
• Flatulence or constipation

Long-term use may require occasional GP monitoring for magnesium, calcium, and vitamin B12 levels. Rare side effects include allergic reactions, liver enzyme changes, and increased infection risk (e.g. C. difficile, pneumonia). Seek medical attention if you experience severe symptoms or allergic reactions.
