Frequently asked questions
How effective is Yasmin at preventing pregnancy?
With perfect use the combined oral contraceptive pill is around 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. With typical use (including missed pills, vomiting, diarrhoea and interacting medicines), real-world effectiveness is lower, which is why the missed-pill instructions in the PIL should be followed carefully.
Is Yasmin safe while breastfeeding?
Combined pills containing oestrogen, including Yasmin, are not recommended in the first weeks after birth or while establishing breastfeeding because they can reduce milk supply and slightly increase clot risk in the postpartum period. The pharmacist will discuss progestogen-only alternatives if you are breastfeeding.
Does Yasmin protect against sexually transmitted infections?
No. Yasmin only prevents pregnancy. Condoms are still needed to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
Does Yasmin interact with antibiotics or other medicines?
Most everyday antibiotics no longer require additional contraceptive precautions, but enzyme-inducing medicines (such as rifampicin, certain anti-epileptics and St John's Wort) can reduce effectiveness. List all medicines and supplements in the consultation questionnaire so the pharmacist can confirm safety.
What are the symptoms of a blood clot I should watch for?
Sudden chest pain or breathlessness, coughing up blood, severe pain or swelling in one leg, sudden severe headache, slurred speech, weakness on one side of the body, or sudden visual loss. Seek emergency medical attention if any of these occur.
What if I miss a Yasmin tablet?
Take the missed tablet as soon as you remember and continue the strip as normal. If a tablet is more than 12 hours late, additional precautions may be needed; the exact action depends on which week of the strip you are in. Follow the missed-pill instructions in the Patient Information Leaflet, and consider emergency contraception if intercourse occurred during a missed-pill window.
