RSV Vaccination Service
Protect Yourself or Your Baby from Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus that can cause coughs and colds. Although many infections improve by themselves, RSV can be more serious in babies and older adults, and may lead to complications such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia. The virus spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Vaccination can help reduce the risk of serious illness.
About the RSV Vaccine
- Purpose: The RSV vaccine helps protect against RSV infection and reduces the risk of serious breathing problems, including bronchiolitis and pneumonia.
- Who may benefit: RSV vaccination is particularly important for older adults and during pregnancy, as it can help protect newborn babies during the first few months of life.
- Course: Older adults usually need one dose, which should provide protection for several years. If given in pregnancy, the vaccine is recommended from 28 weeks onwards during each pregnancy to help protect the baby after birth.
- Administration: The vaccine is given as an injection into the upper arm and can be offered all year round.
- Vaccine brand: [ Abrysvo® / Arexvy® / subject to stock availability].
- Common side effects: Mild side effects can include pain or swelling at the injection site, headache, and aching muscles or body. Severe allergic reactions are very rare.
Who Can Receive the Vaccine?
This service may be suitable for:
- Adults aged 60 years and over who would like private protection against RSV
- Pregnant adults aged 18 years and over, from 28 weeks of pregnancy, where clinically appropriate
- People who prefer to access RSV vaccination privately rather than through another provider
Boots’ private RSV page says its service is not suitable for anyone under 60, for anyone pregnant and under 18, and for people who have had an allergic reaction to injections or vaccinations in the past. NHS guidance separately states that RSV vaccination is offered in pregnancy from 28 weeks and is used to help protect babies after birth.
Who Should Not Receive the Vaccine?
This service may not be suitable for:
- People under 60 years old, unless pregnant and eligible under the service protocol
- Anyone pregnant and under 18 years old
- Anyone who has had a serious allergic reaction to a previous RSV vaccine or one of its ingredients
- Anyone who is currently unwell with a high temperature
- Anyone who is not considered suitable following pharmacist or prescriber assessment
These exclusion points reflect Boots’ private service wording and NHS safety guidance on previous anaphylaxis and postponing vaccination if unwell with fever.
Before Your Appointment
- Please wear short sleeves or loose clothing that can be rolled up easily, as the vaccine is given in the upper arm.
- If you are pregnant, please bring any relevant maternity information if requested by the pharmacy.
- Suitability for vaccination will be checked by our pharmacist or healthcare professional before the vaccine is given. Boots notes that final suitability is checked at the appointment.
Important Information
Please note this is a private vaccination service and is not an NHS service. If you think you may qualify for a free NHS RSV vaccination, please speak to your GP, maternity service, or local NHS provider.
As of 26 March 2026, NHS guidance says RSV vaccination is available in pregnancy from 28 weeks, and for older adults under the current programme; from 1 April 2026 in England, eligibility is being expanded to include all adults aged 75 and over who have not yet had a dose, as well as residents in care homes for older adults.
