Frequently asked questions
How many doses do I need?
The injected vaccine (Typhim Vi) is a single dose. The oral vaccine (Vivotif) is a course of three capsules taken over five days on alternate days. Both give protection for about three years, after which a booster is needed if you travel to a risk area again.
How far before travel should I get it?
Have the vaccine at least 2 weeks before travelling to a typhoid-risk area. It can be given closer to departure, but doing so may increase your risk because protection takes time to develop.
Where do I get vaccinated?
The vaccine is administered by a GPhC-registered pharmacist at our Holborn travel clinic, Ways Pharmacy, 77 Southampton Row, London WC1B 4ET, near the British Museum and Holborn station. You can read more on our Holborn branch page.
Should I have the injection or the oral vaccine?
Most people have the single injection, which is suitable from age 2. The oral course is mainly offered to people who cannot have the injection and is not suitable for those with weakened immune systems or for young children. The pharmacist will advise based on your age and medical history.
Does the vaccine replace food and water precautions?
No. The typhoid vaccine reduces but does not remove the risk, so safe food and water practices remain essential while travelling. The pharmacist will give practical advice at your appointment.
Safety / who should not
- Administered by a GPhC-registered pharmacist in a private consulting room
- Oral vaccine not suitable for immunosuppressed people; reserved for those who cannot have the injection
- Not given to anyone with a confirmed allergy to a vaccine component
- 15-minute observation period after the injection
- Common side effects (injection-site soreness, redness, mild fever, headache, digestive upset) are usually short-lived
