Treatment options and prices

Option What it is Price Details
Finasteride 1mg tablets Prescription-only tablet taken once a day. It lowers levels of DHT, the hormone involved in male pattern hair loss, to slow further loss and, in some men, help regrowth. £19.99 (1 month, 28 tablets) · £49.99 (3 months, 84 tablets) Finasteride 1mg
Minoxidil 5% scalp foam (Regaine for Men Extra Strength) A foam applied to the scalp, available without a prescription. The pharmacist can advise whether it suits you, alone or alongside finasteride. £47.99 (1 month) · £99.99 (3 months) Regaine for Men

Finasteride works slowly. It usually takes 3 to 6 months of daily use before you can see whether hair loss has stabilised. You need to keep taking it to keep the benefit: if you stop, the effect starts to reverse within about 6 months and hair returns to how it was within 9 to 12 months. A first supply is up to 3 months; further supplies follow a review of how well it is working and any side effects.

Who can use this service

  • Men aged 18 and over
  • Gradual hair loss that looks like male pattern hair loss — a receding hairline at the front or temples and/or thinning at the crown
  • Able to send clear photos of the front, top and crown of the scalp, or show your scalp during the video call, so the pharmacist can see the pattern
  • Not taking finasteride 5mg (Proscar), dutasteride or another 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor

Finasteride is not used in women. Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets. Hair loss in women has different causes — please speak to your GP or ask the pharmacist about non-prescription options.

When you should see a GP or get urgent help instead

The pharmacist will not supply finasteride, and will suggest you see your GP, if your hair loss could have another cause:

  • Patchy, round bald areas (possible alopecia areata)
  • Sudden hair loss, or rapid shedding all over the scalp
  • Scarring, redness, scaling, pain or infection on the scalp
  • Hair loss with other symptoms such as tiredness, weight change or feeling unwell, which may point to a thyroid problem, low iron or another condition
  • Prostate cancer, or a previous low PSA result
  • A history of depression or suicidal thoughts — the pharmacist will discuss this carefully before any supply

Stop finasteride and seek medical advice straight away if you notice low mood or thoughts of self-harm, or any breast lump, pain, swelling or nipple discharge. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call NHS 111 (option 2 for mental health) or 999 in an emergency.

How it works

  1. Choose and pay. Choose the finasteride 1mg pack and pay online, or call 020 8106 7084.
  2. Complete an online health questionnaire and confirm your identity. After payment you fill in a health questionnaire and send photos of the front, top and crown of your scalp. We confirm your identity by an upload of photo ID, or by checking your ID during a video call.
  3. Pharmacist speaks with you by phone or video. The pharmacist reviews your photos and answers with you — or looks at your scalp on video — and confirms whether finasteride is suitable.
  4. If suitable, we post your medicine or you collect it; if not, you get a full refund. Orders approved by the pharmacist before 3:00pm on a working day are posted the same day — see our shipping information for delivery charges. Or collect from the Holborn pharmacy once your order is approved. If treatment is not suitable, including when the pharmacist gives advice only, you receive a full refund.

If the medicine you chose is not suitable, the pharmacist may suggest another option or give you a full refund.

Frequently asked questions

How much does finasteride cost at Ways Pharmacy?

Finasteride 1mg costs £19.99 for 1 month (28 tablets) or £49.99 for 3 months (84 tablets). It is supplied only after a pharmacist assessment.

How long does finasteride take to work?

Usually 3 to 6 months of daily use before you can judge whether hair loss has slowed. Some men see regrowth; results vary from person to person.

What happens if I stop taking it?

The benefit starts to wear off within about 6 months, and hair usually returns to its previous state within 9 to 12 months. Finasteride needs to be taken long term to keep working.

Why do you need photos of my scalp?

Finasteride only helps male pattern hair loss. Photos or a video call let the pharmacist check the pattern and rule out other causes, such as patchy alopecia or scalp conditions, that need a different approach.

What are the side effects?

Uncommon side effects include lower sex drive, erection problems, ejaculation changes and low mood. Breast tenderness or enlargement can also occur. Some men have reported sexual side effects that continued after stopping. The pharmacist will go through these with you before you start.

Can women use finasteride?

No. Finasteride is not used in women, and women who are or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets.

Can I use minoxidil foam as well?

Some men use minoxidil foam on the scalp alongside finasteride. Ask the pharmacist whether this is suitable for you.

Is hair loss treatment available on the NHS?

Treatment for male pattern hair loss is not normally available on the NHS. Ways Pharmacy Holborn is a private pharmacy and does not provide NHS services.

Suspected side effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

This page gives factual information about pharmacy services and medicines. Any medicine is supplied only after a pharmacist has assessed that it is suitable for you.
