You do not need to have symptoms to consider an STI test. A new partner, sex without a condom or a condom failure may be a reason to check. We can help you understand the available testing options.
Symptoms need assessment
If you have pain passing urine, unusual discharge, sores or a rash, or a partner has an STI, seek prompt advice from a sexual health clinic. A screening panel may not provide the examination or treatment you need.

When is the right time to test?
A test taken too soon after sexual contact can miss an infection. This is called the window period. The right timing depends on the infection, the test and your circumstances.
General window-period guidance; seek assessment sooner if you have symptoms.
Depends on the test used. Confirm the timing for your test, especially if you use PEP or PrEP.
Earlier testing or repeat testing may be advised depending on your risk and symptoms.
These are general NHS service guidelines, not a personalised testing schedule. A negative result only relates to the infections and sites tested, and needs to be interpreted alongside the window period.

Your questions, answered
Can I have an STI without symptoms?
Yes. Many STIs cause no symptoms. Testing may be appropriate after sex without a condom, a condom failure or when you have a new partner. If you have symptoms or a partner has an STI, contact a sexual health clinic promptly for assessment.
Which sample should I choose?
The sample needs to match both the infection and the site of sexual contact. A urine or vaginal swab screen does not rule out infection in the throat or rectum. Ask the team about the right sample sites; a sexual health clinic may be more appropriate if you need additional swabs or an examination.
When will I receive my results?
Timing depends on the panel and starts when the laboratory receives the sample. We will confirm the expected turnaround for your chosen test before collection. Some results can take longer or need further confirmation; this is not a same-day testing promise.
What happens if a result is positive?
The appropriate next step depends on the infection and result. Some reactive screens need a confirmatory test. STI treatment is not provided in branch; a sexual health clinic can arrange assessment, treatment and support with informing partners as appropriate. Any additional private care or tests may have separate fees.
Can I arrange a test at Beeston?
Selected sexual health testing is available by arrangement at Beeston. Call 0115 925 5584 to confirm the exact panel, sample type, preparation and collection time before you travel or pay. Do not assume that every Holborn test is offered at Beeston.
Is there a home testing option?
The two six-infection screens currently have self-collection home-kit options at £199. These are different from the £209 in-store options. Check suitability, the samples required, dispatch and return arrangements before ordering. Home sample collection is not a clinician home visit.
Can someone under 18 use this service?
Please contact the pharmacy to check eligibility for the specific private test; the blood-and-urine screen is listed for adults aged 18 and over. NHS sexual health services also support young people and provide free, confidential advice and testing.
Can I get free STI testing through the NHS?
Yes. NHS sexual health clinics offer free, confidential STI testing and treatment. Ways Pharmacy offers a private, paid testing option. You can find an NHS sexual health clinic if you prefer.
