Can I get the HPV vaccine free on the NHS?
The NHS offers the HPV vaccine free to children in school Year 8 (age 12 to 13). If you were eligible but missed it, you can usually still have it free up to your 25th birthday. Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men aged 45 and under can also get it free through NHS sexual health clinics.
Most adults aged 25 and over are not covered by the NHS and choose private vaccination. Ways Pharmacy Holborn is a private pharmacy and does not provide NHS HPV vaccinations. If you think you qualify for a free vaccine, ask your GP practice or a local sexual health clinic first.
How many doses do I need, and what will it cost?
We follow UK national guidance (the UKHSA Green Book). The number of doses depends on your age when you start and on your immune system, and your pharmacist confirms your schedule before the first dose.

If you have already had one or more HPV doses, the pharmacist will check your record and tell you how many more you need. Every course is priced at £175 per dose. The total for your course is confirmed before your first dose, and the remaining doses are scheduled for you at the first visit.
What does Gardasil 9 protect against?
Gardasil 9 covers nine HPV types, including the high-risk types most commonly linked to HPV-related cancers and the two types that cause most genital warts. It helps protect against:
- cervical, vulval and vaginal cancers and pre-cancers
- anal cancer
- genital warts
The vaccine works best before exposure to HPV. It does not treat an existing HPV infection, and it does not cover every HPV type, so it does not replace cervical screening.

- Pharmacist assessment. At your first visit the pharmacist checks your age, medical history and any previous HPV doses, explains the dose options and confirms the vaccine is suitable for you. Payment is taken at the pharmacy after the assessment.
- First dose and your schedule. You receive the first dose, and the pharmacist books the rest of your course.

Can I have the vaccine if I already have HPV or have had an abnormal smear?
Usually yes. The vaccine cannot treat an existing infection, but it can still protect against the HPV types you have not been exposed to. Discuss your history with the pharmacist at the assessment.
Do I still need cervical screening after the HPV vaccine?
Yes. The vaccine does not cover every HPV type, so keep attending NHS cervical screening when you are invited.
Who should not have Gardasil 9, or should wait?
Anyone with an allergy to a component of Gardasil 9 should not have it. Vaccination is deferred during pregnancy until after the baby is born, and postponed if you have a fever on the day.
