Clarithromycin is a prescription-only macrolide antibiotic. If it is not suitable — including when the pharmacist recommends self-care instead — you pay nothing, and the pharmacist explains your other options. If you have already paid and the pharmacist finds the medicine is not suitable, you receive a full refund.

Dosage
- Adults and children aged 12 and over: 500mg (2 tablets) twice a day for 5 days

Who should not take this medicine
- Anyone allergic to clarithromycin, erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics
- People with a history of heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation) or low potassium
- People taking certain medicines that interact with clarithromycin, such as simvastatin, colchicine, ergotamine or some heart medicines — always tell the pharmacist everything you take
- People with severe liver problems
- People with warning signs that need urgent care, or symptoms that have not improved after antibiotics — please see a GP
Possible side effects
Common side effects include a change in taste, feeling sick, diarrhoea, stomach pain, headache and difficulty sleeping. Stop taking it and get urgent medical help if you develop swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, a severe rash, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.
