Bonjela is a clear oral gel applied inside the mouth to relieve the pain and discomfort of common mouth ulcers and cold sores, and to aid the healing of sore spots caused by dentures and braces. For adults and young people over 16, sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for

Adults and over-16s with a painful mouth ulcer or cold sore
Denture and brace wearers with a sore spot inside the mouth

Not suitable for: Children and adolescents under 16 years, because of a possible link between salicylates and Reye's syndrome, a very rare condition affecting the brain and liver. Do not use it if you have a stomach ulcer, or if you are allergic to salicylates, aspirin, other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, or any of the other ingredients. Speak to a doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you take aspirin, blood-thinning medicines or medicines for gout.

How to use

Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
For mouth ulcers and sore areas: using a clean finger, massage about one centimetre of gel onto the sore area.
Repeat no more often than once every 3 hours.
For denture sore spots: massage about one centimetre of gel onto the sore area and leave at least 30 minutes before putting the dentures back in. Do not apply the gel directly onto the dentures.
Do not use more than the label tells you to, as salicylate toxicity can occur.
If symptoms have not gone after 7 days of treatment, see your doctor or dentist.

Safety and storage

Do not exceed the stated dose; salicylate toxicity can occur if you use more than the label states.
May cause a burning sensation on damaged skin. Stop and seek medical help if you get wheezing, breathlessness, itching or swelling of the face, tongue or throat.
Do not store above 25°C.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
