Frequently asked questions

What does folic acid do?

Under the EU/UK Register of Health Claims, folic acid contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy, to normal blood formation, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Each tablet provides 400 micrograms.

Why is 400mcg the recommended amount in pregnancy?

The NHS advises women who are trying to conceive and those in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy to take 400 micrograms of folic acid a day. Each Numark tablet provides exactly this amount.

When should I start and stop taking it?

Ideally start before you become pregnant and continue until you are 12 weeks pregnant. If you are already pregnant and not yet taking it, start as soon as possible and speak to your midwife or GP.

Do some people need a higher dose?

Yes. Some women are advised to take a higher 5mg dose, which is only available on prescription — for example if you have diabetes, a higher body weight, take certain medicines, or have had a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect. Speak to your GP or midwife if this may apply to you.
