Anbesol Liquid is a sugar-free antiseptic and local anaesthetic mouth liquid containing lidocaine hydrochloride, chlorocresol and cetylpyridinium chloride for the temporary relief of pain from recurrent mouth ulcers and denture irritation in adults, and of teething pain in babies from 5 months when non-medicine methods have not helped. 10ml bottle, pharmacy (P) medicine sold by Ways Pharmacy (UK).

Who it is for

Adults with painful recurrent mouth ulcers or sore spots from dentures.
Parents of teething babies aged 5 months and over, once rubbing the gums, teething rings or a cool spoon have not helped.

Not suitable for: Anyone allergic to lidocaine or other amide-type local anaesthetics, chlorocresol, cetylpyridinium chloride or any other ingredient; people with porphyria; babies under 5 months. Not recommended in pregnancy. Do not use it at the same time as any other product containing lidocaine, and take care if the mouth lining is broken or injured where you want to apply it. It contains about 68% alcohol, so ask a pharmacist first if a child is also using other medicines that contain alcohol. Speak to a pharmacist or doctor before use if you are breastfeeding, have an underlying medical condition or take other medicines.

How to use

Read the label and Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before use.
Cover the mouth of the bottle with a clean fingertip, turn the bottle upside down once and return it upright.
Adults and the elderly: rub the liquid on the fingertip on to the painful area. Two applications one after the other are normally enough. Do not apply more often than every 3 hours.
Babies from 5 months and children: apply once to the affected gum using the fingertip, undiluted. If needed, repeat after 3 hours, up to 6 applications in 24 hours.
Do not use for more than 7 days for each teething episode. If symptoms last more than 7 days, see your doctor or dentist.
Do not exceed the stated dose. Replace the cap and keep away from naked flames.

How often can I apply Anbesol Liquid?

From what age can babies use it for teething?

From 5 months, and only when non-medicine measures such as rubbing the gums or a cooled teething ring have not helped. Do not use for more than 7 days for each teething episode; see a doctor if your baby gets worse.

How long can I use it for mouth ulcers?

Use it for short-term relief only. If the ulcer or pain lasts more than 7 days, see your doctor or dentist.

Can I use it with other mouth products?

Do not use it with any other product that contains lidocaine. Ask our pharmacist if you are using other medicated mouth gels, sprays or washes.

Can I use it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

It is not recommended during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, ask a pharmacist or doctor before use.

Is it sugar free?

Yes. Anbesol Liquid is sugar free. It does contain alcohol, menthol and colouring agents – see the PIL for the full list.
